OUR HISTORY
On the night of February 21, 1961, a group of citizens led by Guy Boyette, L.C. Barnes, and D.B. Sheffield, met at Rock Ridge School auditorium to discuss the interest in and need for establishing a volunteer fire department for the Rock Ridge community and area. At this public meeting, a plan was made to further investigate the cost and a site for a local fire department. In a short time, a location was found and the decision was made to move forward with the establishment and construction of the Rock Ridge Volunteer Fire Department.
The department was incorporated in March 1961, and the first fire station was built approximately 400 feet to the east of Rock Ridge School. On April 7, 1961 the department directors voted to purchase the first fire truck manufactured by American La France. One month later, the first 26 firefighters volunteered and training began to serve the citizens of Rock Ridge with fire protection.
In 1991 the department completed construction on a new firehouse that is still in use today. In early 2000, the department increased its involvement in the community through its introduction of public education and fire prevention programs. In 2003, the department diversified by implementing a First Responder program to provide emergency medical assistance to the public.
During the 2006-2007 year a memorial garden was created and dedicated around the department flag pole to recognize the devoted members of the Rock Ridge Volunteer Fire Department who have passed away. In 2007, the department voluntarily underwent an insurance rating review to lower our previous Insurance Service Office ( ISO) rating from the state. This rating directly affects the amount homeowners pay for insurance in our district. The department improved its previous rating of 9, the lowest possible rating recognized by the Office of the State Fire Marshal, to an enhanced class 7 rating! The whole community benefits from the efforts of the Rock Ridge Volunteer Fire Department.
